Is homework and practice necessary?

Which begs the question – If your students are in rehearsal 4 days a week and receive a weekly lesson, how necessary is home practice?

I rarely GIVE homework. I have them take home anything they did not complete. I am at odds about homework. The parents of my top students want more and more work for the students to do at home. My bottom students parents complain that their kids do nothing but homework and they don’t have time because of sports, dancing, etc.
So the question for me is…How do I get the students who don’t do their work in class to do their work in class so they don’t have homeword and their parents don’t leave nasty messages on my phone?
This is a sticky topic and situation. I guess this is where differentiation really comes into play. Perhaps an assignment should have different components and levels so group A does #1-20, group B 20-40 and C does 40-60. If they can’t complete their numbers, then it’s homework. I’ve started dividing my orchestra lessons into REVIEW/WARMUP-PRACTICE-TEACH-PRACTICE-LONGER PRACTICE SESSION. That way, material is reviewed and new material is learned and concert music is refined.
