Tips for organization and getting things done (I recommend reading Getting Things Done by David Allen).

-Keep computer templates rather than each year’s files. If you do want to keep them create an ‘Archives’ folder.

-Remember what Einstein said – Keep things as simple as possible, but no simpler.

-Have “Leaky Margins”. If your boundaries and walls are too rigid they are bound to break. Allow some flow. For example, I kept wanting to put all my books on shelves but found myself constantly putting a few where I use them, such as my guitar book on the floor next to the guitar. So, that’s where that book goes!

-Sometimes it takes time and a patience to let items tell you where they want to go. I recently moved classrooms at one of the schools I teach at. As a music teacher I had a large mirror for students to use but I didn’t know where to put it in the new room. I had to be patient while it was unmounted and just staring at me, wanting to be completed! But after a week, I found the perfect spot for it. :)

-Paper systems have their electronic counterpart but the lines are too easily blurred. On my iPhone I have my reference memos, GTD outlines / action lists, and a journal. I found myself adding projects and actions to my reference memos because I had that program open but we would never add a To-Do into our file cabinet! By easily moving some electronic information into the right system, my head felt immediately better – it knew where to look!
