I just finished the book, Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin. This is a must read for aspiring musicians and parents of musicians. It dispels the myth of innate talent and uses research to show that drive and environmental factors are the real path to greatness.
This is a re-post from March but I find myself using these pencils so often it’s worth repeating. I own about 6 of them and keep around my apartment and at the different schools I teach at.
Us musicians are always using pencils and I’ve seen a number of people look for pencils with softer leads to make marking (and erasing) easier.
Several years ago I discovered drafting / architectural lead holders. Then you can purchase a variety of lead density. They are sharpened either with the cap or with a lead pointer.
I have to reitereate my recommendation for Pirastro Obligato strings. These strings are great and can make a bad bass sound reasonable! Yesterday, a student and I put Obligatos on this bass and the change in sound was remarkable. No, this didn’t make it sound like a Gabrielli or Panormo but it no longer took paint off the walls. (yeah the bass is still garbage but at least it sounds better and is easier to play since these strings are lower tension)
